Q:How much will it cost to start cat fish farming on a small scale? A:”Small Scale” is a very relative term. What is small scale to Mr A might be big scale to Mr B so it depends on how much you have to invest; but small scale for us is when you already have a source of water, a 36ft by 30ft space and an additional N350,000; then you can start catfish farming. But very many people start with much less than that and still succeed........once they follow the principles in our manual.
Q:I’m interested in cat-fish farming but still employed. How can I combine the two?. A:Stock “young adults” or juveniles on take-off as these are easier to manage. You can also feed them only twice daily but they must be fed to satiation those 2 times i.e. till they are very full. Train them to eat very early in the morning before you leave for office and when you come back in the evening but if you can get a helper for your farm you will achieve better results. The how is in our manual.
Q: Because of my neighbourhood, the stench the waste water produces is my problem. How do I prevent it? A:Dig a “soak-away” that will take all the waste water in your farm at your backyard if you have one and release all the waste water there. If you’re going into large scale farming, dig the soak-away until it gets to sharp-sand level (this is deep but not deep enough to produce water) and dispose all your waste water there. It should never get full and the stench will never come out. If you can’t dig a soak-away, feed with foreign feed and flush your ponds each time you release dirty water into the neighbourhood gutter. With foreign feed, the waste water poduces less offensive odour.
Q:Can I come for training at your farm? A: Yes you can. It takes 2 days and costs N25,000 to take you through all you need to know about how to run a profitable catfsh farm. Cat-fish farming is like driving a car; the longer you pracice it, paying attention to the best practices, the better you get at it. The longer you practise catfish farming, PAYING ATTENTION TO THE NATURE OF THE FISHES, the more you understand what is good for them. Our Manual gives you more than the basics but if you're still interested in being tarined on our farm, you're welcome.
Q:What guarantee do I have that I will get buyers for the fishes when they reach table-size? A:If you buy the catfish manual, part of the services you get is a free 4 month subscription at Nigeria's No1 online business directory for fish farmers, FISH BUYERS, fish consultants, fingerlings, juveniles and brood-stock producers nationwide - so you can source your breeding stock easy (i.e. fingerlings or juveniles) and also sell your final products easy too i.e. table-size fishes.
Q:Can I specialise in the production of fingerlings and juveniles and still retain my job? I’m a civil servant and I close by 3:30pm. A:No you can’t except your job allows you to get to office any time you wish or you have someone to look after your fishes. When you inject your fishes at 10pm, you have to be around at 8am (and stay longer or arrive earlier at times) to strip the fishes and also be around at 2pm the next day to remove the nets in the vat. If you fail to keep to these times, your efforts may be in vain – but as said earlier you can raise juveniles to table-sizes and still keep your current job.
Q:My problem with fish farming is the 4-5 months period you have to wait before you can sell the table-size. Apart from raising fingerlings, isn’t there any other way one can quickly turn over ones’ money in the business? A:Yes there are 2 other ways. One, buy fingerlings from a reputable farm and raise them to Juveniles in 4 to 6 weeks to sell. Secondly buy post-juveniles or young adults and raise them for 4 to 6 weeks to roast and sell. |
